Best Soul Food in Morristown

Short version: The tasty food, nostalgic deep south vibe, and friendly owners will bring me back again. Long version: I went to Morristown from Bristol one afternoon for an errand and my teenager son and I needed a place to eat. I looked up nearby mom and pop restaurants and came across Big Mamas Kitchen. The name grabbed my attention, then I saw some good reviews and decided to try it out. I don't know what it was about the place, but it had an old deep south familiarity about it that I just loved. Between us, we had the catfish, fried okra, yams, fries, and Mac and cheese. Every bite was delicious. The husband wife team are gracious hosts and can cook up a good meal. The husband said he breads his own okra and cuts his own catfish and those details made the meal. I will definitely be back when I head south again. Thank you both for a nice evening and a great meal.

57m · Shared with Public Big Mama's Kitchen has been around for a while, and until now, we never tried it. We had always judged it by the building's appearance, its location, and the name. Let me tell you that was such a mistake!! My granddaughter and I dined there tonight, and I wanted to share our experience. From the moment we stepped inside, we were warmly welcomed by two lovely young ladies who had just started working there today. Even though they are new they were outstanding hostesses, answering all my questions and making us feel right at home—as if we were family. While we waited for our food, the owner, Theo, and his wife, India, came over to greet us, further making us feel appreciated and welcomed. When our meals arrived, a phrase came to mind: "We eat with our eyes." It’s so true—seeing delicious food makes you want to dig in immediately. As soon as I saw my plate, I thought, "Wow!" And the first bite took me to heaven—literally, I felt like I’d died and gone there. The soul food was bursting with authentic flavors. The chicken wings were seasoned to perfection. The baked mac and cheese was creamy, cheesy, and uniquely flavorful. My granddaughter took her first bite and said, “Gram, I want a whole tray of that.” Considering how picky she is, that’s high praise! She loved the New York cheesesteak, eating every bite along with the perfectly cooked French fries. She doesn’t like fried okra, but after trying mine, she couldn’t stop eating it. I also ordered a side of collard greens—they were incredibly flavorful, so much so that I wanted to savor every last bite and drink the broth. The key words for today’s meal were: "AUTHENTICITY"—it tasted just like grandma’s cooking, real and full of authentic flavor. "FLAVOR & TEXTURE"—everything was mouthwatering, perfectly seasoned, savory, and incredibly good. "ATMOSPHERE"—family-friendly, positive vibes, and welcoming. "SERVICE"—exceptional, friendly, and warm, like family. And "VALUE"—generous portions, affordable prices, and well worth the wait. Big Mama's Kitchen is definitely a place we’ll be returning to often. I want to try every item on their menu and can’t wait to go back. Oh, and I must mention—the sweet tea was the best true Southern sweet tea we’ve ever had. They also serve homemade ranch, a special house sauce, and a yum-yum sauce, all of which were delicious. Today, I learned a few things: first, never judge a building by its exterior—it's what’s inside that truly counts. And second, "The food is soul good and good for the soul." The best place to go locally for authentic comfort food. The fried chicken is phenomenal. I've not had the meatloaf yet, but those who do say it is legendary. Check it out when you're in the mood for a soul/comfort menu treat. On a different note, I became acquainted with the owner at another business in town where we were both getting royally hosed by inept management by a very young manager who obviously was not properly trained. I watched as she handled herself with class, dignity, restraint and firm professionalism as successful business owners like her and I do. I look forward to more great food and a fruitful business relationship in the future. 5 large stars. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

My( Felicia's) experience was great. The food was delicious and the review would only let me give 5 stars, but honestly I personally would give 10 stars. I called in my order and the Lady on the phone was very nice .I picked up my order and the Lady at the register that rung my order up was nice as well.
